Major-element geochemistry of pelites

Abstract Pelites (shales and mudstones) are arguably the most important rock type for interpreting metamorphism. Their significance derives from their widespread occurrence range of mineral assemblages they develop at different conditions pressure temperature. We compiled a global database 5729 major-element whole-rock analyses pelites metamorphic grades to granulite-facies paragneisses) (1) determine an average composition, (2) examine variability in (3) assess if there is evidence grade-related geochemical changes. XFe3+ 2 × Fe2O3/(2 Fe2O3 FeO) was measured 1964 samples 0.23. On Al2O3-FeO-MgO (AFM) diagram, plots within strong clustering between projected molar 0.30–0.55 (median 0.42) AMs [Al2O3 – (3 K2O)]/[Al2O3 K2O) MgO] 0.0–0.4 0.19). show continuous decrease volatile content with increasing meta-morphic grade diagenetic biotite zone. Lower higher porphyroblast subsolidus sillimanite or K-feldspar zones, well garnet zone, may reflect sampling bias metasomatism.
